Building My Dream

My formative years were spent on a small hobby farm in Central Illinois. We had a large garden, chickens, rabbits, more barn cats than we could count at times, and a faithful dog. My entire summer was planned around getting my 4-H projects done and I was also involved with the local needlework fair. I spent my days running around in cornfields with my best friend and neighbor Corey and I spent hours playing “Ma and Laura Ingalls” with my mother as we worked in our garden. I loved every minute of it.

While we moved away and I have experienced several other types of living in many other places my heart still belongs on that farm. I have spent a large portion of my adult life climbing the corporate ladder but deep down, all I want to do is get back to my roots and do what I know I was meant to do. I want to improve the world by planting pollinator gardens and beautify where I live. I want to keep bees and raise chickens. I want to use fresh ingredients from my garden (or support another local famer) to cook and try new recipes in my kitchen.

That is where Hobart & Hazel’s Flower Farm and Apiary comes from. I have dreams of it being a larger organic farm operation someday but for now, it’s me. Just a woman from Central Illinois building her own dream one day at a time. My dream is deeply rooted in family history but it is also a story of the future and of doing my part to build the type of world I want to live in. I hope you will enjoy my story as I learn some of the skills I will need to succeed and I promise to make it entertaining and educational in return.
